Thanks for all your kind words, guys. ♥ I'll reply to your comments individually when I return.

Which brings me to the point of this post! I will be leaving appallingly early tomorrow morning to go to D.C and meet my potential employers/check out my potential apartment! I'll be there until Saturday night. I will most likely have regular access to internet, but I'll be scarce.

I should, however, have a lot of downtime, and I'm looking to do some writing type things that are fun and will make me feel a little better about things in general. So I thought I'd open one of these up again, since it's been a while!

Name one or more of my original characters and a prompt, and I will write a drabble. It can be from any of my original fics, or any cowriting projects. ♥ Go crazy!

Okay, time to attempt sleep again. See you guys later!

My writing output has been horrendously low lately. Thankfully I am working on Hungry Ground again, along with the [livejournal.com profile] imaginarybeasts story! I will get back into shape, so to speak.

In the meantime, here are a couple pieces from the Drabble-thon! I will catch up on comments and links later tonight, hopefully.

Possession is Nine-Tenths of the Law: Felix and Alex get introduced )

The Imperial Guard: Celeste, 'The world should have ended this morning' )

Catalyst: Tuyen, on pain )

And hopefully more to come later!

I am so very all over the place lately. The thing about worrying too much about getting everything done is that I often get less done than I would have otherwise!

I took a few steps towards being more efficient: I rearranged my bathroom sink and threw out old makeup and such to make room for the new, nice stuff. I also sent out a new round of queries for the first time in forever, because 1) the three agents who requested pages haven't gotten back to me yet, and 2) I got a rejection on a query+sample pages the other day that told me the book would be a "hard sell" and it depressed me a little, and 3) being proactive is better than going insane.

But for my own reference, here are the things that need to get done:

- Finish graduation thank you notes.
- Finish up cover letter and apply to embassy job.
- Work on Hungry Ground! At least 500-1000 words a day, preferably more.
- Start [livejournal.com profile] imaginarybeasts story.
- Set up cowriting posts.
- Catch up on reading and linkage for the Drabble-thon.
- Create Justified pimp post in honor of the fabuloustastic finale.
- Rearrange bookshelf to fit new books.
- PROFIT, etc

But first! Lunch! ♥

So you know how I came home all gung-ho and all ready to write and mess around and have fun and all those other things you do on vacation?

I got sick immediately and have spent most of the week too braindead to do much of anything. H-Hahaha orz. Thankfully I got antibiotics somehow, despite the doctor once again making a huge effing deal out of the fact that I get nervous in medical settings. IT IS NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN TALK ME OUT OF, GUYS. I CANNOT TALK MYSELF OUT OF IT. Just let me lie down for two seconds and it will be all good.

I am finally starting to feel a bit better, though, so tomorrow I plan on catching up on comments/links for the Original Fiction Drabble-thon, and I want to throw in a couple more fics myself. We've got tons of awesome prompts over there, so if you want to play, come on over. ♥

I haven't had the energy to do much else except watch a lot of things. I watched the first season of LOST again, which: DANGEROUS. I stopped watching in season three, and I have been spoiled to hell and back and know that the way to the finale is paved with heartbreak and tears and frustration. But. Sayid! Sun-Hwa motherfucking Kwon (and Jin as well, naturally)! Rousseau! And I haven't even gotten to Ben Linus. Gahhh must stop before it's too late.

I have also started watching Justified, the new modern Western on FX. Westerns are so not my thing, but I really enjoy it! Possibly because I find the protagonist really very hot. Seriously. UNF.

Which got me thinking about the meme that was going around a long time ago where people talked about the fictional characters they found most attractive. Out of curiosity, who are yours? I'll give you my Top Ten once I have the brainpower to do picspam.

Hope your summer is off to a good start. ♥

So, commencement happened. It was sort of traumatically long and busy, and our commencement speaker drew protesters that I had to walk past on the way to the auditorium. (One of them told me, "Congratulations!" which I thought was pretty hilarious.)

But there were a lot of good things: we marched in to "Jai Ho" instead of "Pomp and Circumstance," there was a techno remix of the Horah at one point, and honorary degree recipient Paul Simon played a gorgeous version of "The Boxer" for us. ♥ And all the wonderful support I received wasn't too shabby, either.

So I am now the owner of a B.A in East Asian Studies, Cum Laude, with minors in Creative Writing, English, and Anglo-American Literature. Well, in theory - my actual degree is coming in the mail in a few weeks. I have an empty folder with a note. But it's the thought that counts.

Hello, rest of life. I will have to figure out what I want from you now.

But I have a little while to relax, so first order of business: write! Write lots! And what better way to get started than with an Original Fiction Drabble-thon! To those of you who want to play with some original fic - or even just give prompts - come on over and play!
sarashina: (Default)
THINGS THAT MUST BE WRITTEN:

- Hungry Ground ch 2
- IMPERIAL GUARD (anything! even if it's not the chapter, random drabbles will do!)
- Projectfic for Elle
- Prince/Elika for Chira
- Lightning and Hope for Endy
- Shounen Onmyouji fic for [livejournal.com profile] glass_icarus and [livejournal.com profile] inarticulate
- Continuation of LJ log with [livejournal.com profile] ivory_and_horn

Busybusybusy getting ready for the end of the semester, and then GRADUATION. Eeek.

Also, Glee tonight: not PERFECT, but it was very right in quite a few places. Great character development for Kurt, Mercedes and Quinn, loved Tina and Artie's cute nosy couple-y moment, and the music was gorgeous - Chris Colfer's version of "A House is Not a Home" especially. ♥

So I just came off a hellacious couple of weeks (which I will explain properly sometime soon) and I am feeling FREE AS THE WIND BLOWS. Best part? So many of my mental processes have been freed up, and I've been thinking about writing a lot more than I have been lately. Which feels so, so good.

I was thinking of a simple exercise I used to do with writing partners - I was actually telling [livejournal.com profile] moonsheen about it the other day - and I thought I'd put it up here so that we all could play.

Here's how it goes: you ask me a question about a writing project, I answer, and ask a question about yours. Simple as that! It could be about a specific project, or something in general (like, say, "Who is your most ____ character?" or something like that.) And the questions can keep going back and forth for as long as you like.

I've always found that it's easier to get enthusiastic about a project and dive right into it when you can share your enthusiasm with someone else. And there are my ulterior motives, of course - I get to find out about everyone else's writing, too.

Just to remind you all, my big projects are:

Completed:
In Descending Order
Grandmaster Draw

In progress:
Catalyst
The Imperial Guard
The Hungry Ground
Possession is Nine-Tenths of the Law

And there are also short stories like "The Mountain Sleeps" (and the not-yet-written universe based around that story), and cowriting and such.

Let's play?
sarashina: (Default)
Give me a character or pairing, as well as a prompt (a word, a phrase, a cliche, an AU, whatever) and I will write something of indeterminate length!

sarashina: (Default)
It's spring break! And I have decided that it shall be a spring break for WRITING. I can't let my less-than-stellar RL luck put a damper on fun fantasy times.

Here's what I'd like to play around with:

1. Cowriting projects that I've been too stressed to contribute to lately
2. Finish that last chapter of Imperial Guard book 1 so I can set it aside for a bit to let stew, and then retool. (Poor Imperial Guard. It goes through so many iterations.)
3. And most importantly, START NEW THINGS. :D

That's where I need your help. I feel like shopping around a little bit, playing with as many new things as possible. I wrote a page of The Hungry Ground earlier, and I've got some other potential projects: Possession is Nine-Tenths of the Law, a YA paranormal/urban fantasy set in Tokyo, and that middle-grade Stranger Than Fiction-esque project I've played around with before. But I want to take a few more things for a test drive to see what grabs me the most at the moment.

There's a certain prompt that I've had a lot of success with - it started both Catalyst and Grandmaster Draw, so I want to give it a go again. Could you guys comment with two different adjectives? I'll try writing a scene with two characters that those adjectives fit, and I'll see where that leads. :D

This thing is so freaking long, but it looks like tons of fun. OC meme! ♥

Ouch! My first two rejections came in within five minutes of each other. Bam bam, just like that. One was from my first choice, and one was from someone I queried yesterday (who wasn't actually supposed to send rejections, but e-mailed me just to say that it wasn't a good fit. Double ouch.)

I am pleased to report that there were no tears involved. There's no crying in publishing.

As per Spring of Rejection and Heartbreak rules and regulations, I took two shots of vodka, one for each rejection. That sort of burns, by the way.

Oh well! Time to go back for more, for I am a masochist.

Argh

Been feeling so burned out lately. I need to get writing-things going so that I can start plotting things again! Going to revisit this meme again - maybe I'll think up some new characters, too.

Rather than a prompt, give me a type of relationship (i.e "best friend," "rival," etc) and I'll write an interaction between characters who embody that relationship. Let me know if you want to play along - I'll give you one, too!

I haven't heard anything from the agent I queried yet, which is probably a good sign, actually. From what I've read on her blog, her assistant does an elimination round of sorts before passing the queries on. She posted some statistics to give poor saps like me an idea: three weeks' worth of queries was a little more than 2,600 e-mails. Of those, the assistant sent on 56, and the agent chose 15 of those to request sample pages from. And that's only sample pages, so she'll choose very few of those to request full manuscripts from, and may not even offer to represent any at all.

Gulp. So yeah, hopefully the fact that I haven't heard anything is because I've survived the whittling down thus far.

After a week of feeling like I might explode if I saw "No new messages" (or worse yet, got an e-mail that wasn't it) one more time, I finally wasn't glued to the Send/Receive button all day. It helped that it's the weekend, but still. In general it just turned out to be the worst time ever to send off the query, since I had a week off and completed the work I had to do pretty early into it. There was a lot of time in the apartment alone that I devoted to driving myself insane!

I imagine it'll be better once I get that response. It's just because it's the first time that it's so nervewracking. It'll still be nervewracking later on, but at least I'll get used to it!

I'm so unfocused lately, though. Blahhhh. I need to start writing something else - maybe I can still sneak in a short piece for [livejournal.com profile] imaginarybeasts!

By the way, I'll be taking Grandmaster Draw offline on March 1st, so if you still want to read the rough draft, you have a little time. ♥
sarashina: (Default)
I finished one round of editing on Grandmaster Draw, and I currently have two rounds of editing going on simultaneously. The second is based on my mom's edits, and is almost finished except for the epilogue. I started the third back at the beginning to keep myself occupied in-between. Those edits cover chapters 1-13 so far.

It's kind of amusing, because the first one was mostly to add things that weren't clear before and clarify plot points and such... and the second and third have mostly been devoted to taking lots and lots of words out. Sometimes changing phrases to clarify them/make them less awkward, but mostly just slashing down adverbs without prejudice. The blood of many an adverb stains my keyboard. ;;

As it stands, I'll be getting the last batch of edits from Mom tomorrow, and I'll finish up my own reread not long after. I'll be at my friend Miranda's house for the weekend, which will help me take a bit of a break, and next week I'll do one more reread... and then probably start the querying process on Tuesday or Wednesday.

G-Gulp.

I'm not in a huge hurry to take everything down just yet because it's under lock and filter here, but I don't want to keep it up too long after I start querying, either. So as it is now, I'll probably take down all but the first few chapters in two weeks or so.

A-And then perhaps I can relax and do fun things, like write that Imperial Guard chapter and finish up the first book! And I want to think about my next YA project, too. It's definitely going to be horror in some regard, but I'm torn. I could either go the horror-comedy route start on the Possession is Nine-Tenths of the Law short story collection, or I could think more seriously about this horror/fairy tale/urban fantasy story that has been kicking around. I KNOW NOT. I need brain cells that are not tied up in Grandmaster Draw to think about that sort of thing.

Aaaanyway! Off to a JSA meeting, and then I must do some actual schoolwork...
sarashina: (Default)
The editing plows onward, and today I'm revisiting Jack's tumultuous relationship with pronouns. Why did I make Jack a shape-shifter with an unknown gender again? Oh, right. Because I love shooting myself in the foot. Other than that, I incorporated a lot of my mom's nitpicks through chapter eight, and hopefully the story reads better for them.

Aaaaanyway. Reviews/recs!

Two books and a manga: The Night Tourist, The Devil's Whisper, and Otoyomegatari )

And lastly, more fashion pictures! Since I didn't wear anything particularly special today, I will show off some winter gear instead.

Coats, hats, and scarves! )

Dinner, and then more editing!

My mom is a technical writer and editor at a small company, and therefore spends five days a week reading other people's lazy writing. Which means she is not about to put up with mine.

I sent her the current draft of Grandmaster Draw, because she's the best editor I know. She hasn't sent me her notes yet, but we talked on the phone, and in our brief writing-related discussion, she pointed out that according to my first draft, the following are now true:

- A deadbolt actually = one of those slide-y chain lock things. I did not actually know that they were something different. Now I need to find out what the chains are called. Maybe just "chains."

- Steel = aluminum. YES BECKY, BASEBALL BATS ARE TTLY MADE OF STEEL. And Thom has super-strength. Where was my brain that day, I wonder.

- 14 - 6 = 6. Or Liam is secretly 12. ONE OF THE TWO.

All goes to show that no matter how much editing you do, you can still miss the most ridiculous mistakes.

Mom also suggested that I change my first line a bit, and told me that tomorrow she'd send the first of many e-mails full of notes about sentences where I decided that verbs/articles were apparently optional, and places where I "connected too many dots."

This just in: my mother is amazing and I am way spoiled.
sarashina: (Oz - OH HAPPY DAY :D)
The Third Original Fiction Drabble-thon has officially begun!

Come play with us! Get started early on your resolution to write more! I've already started us off with a round of prompts, and can't wait to see what you guys come up with. ♥ And don't forget to pimp it to your friends!

And if you're new, don't worry! The list of rules is included in the post, and I'll be happy to answer any questions.
sarashina: (Oz and Alice)
So, uh. Watch me epically drop the ball on this reposting business, haha. To start off, here's the first chapter of Catalyst.

This story is a bit different from most of my other projects. For one, it's straight-up fantasy: most of my stuff is either YA "urban" fantasy type things, or fantasy just by the virtue of taking place in a made-up world. This also began from a cowriting project with hijiri on LJ, though with every new draft, it gets further away from what it was then.

The story is also one of my only stories with a female POV character. I have a lot of female main characters, but for some reason, male POV characters are a lot easier for me to write. That said, Tuyen is one of the easiest characters I've ever written, of any gender. I've been writing with her since I was seventeen, and while she's gone through a few different drafts since then, she's still a lot of fun.

Catalyst was on its fourteenth chapter when I scrapped everything and decided to start over. Here's the new version of chapter one.

Oh. Wait. ‘Once upon a time’ is how these things tend to begin, right? )

I'll probably just backdate the In Descending Order chapters, so next is either The Imperial Guard or some fanfics...
sarashina: (Oz - vexed)
And thus, we start the backlogging with my collection of poems, since we can get that out of the way in one post. These pretty much span from high school to recently, though the ones I am proud of are mostly from high school, strangely enough. I don't have much of a knack for poetry these days.
