You work at an embassy? Can I ask what kind of work? I'm trying to get into diplomacy as a career, so this topic is of great interest.

I'm a diplomatic assistant! I handle five diplomats, occasionally more if someone's on vacation, and I pretty much do whatever they need me to do. I set up meetings, arrange transportation to said meetings, keep calendars and contact lists up to date, arrange hotels and such for visiting delegations, keep the supplies and such stocked in the office, etc etc. Since I just graduated last May I'm at the bottom of the totem pole, but I know at least one assistant who moved up to a higher position within the embassy. And if you're considering a career in diplomacy, being an assistant is great, because you know better than anyone what's involved in being a diplomat.

Awesome! I'd never considered that avenue before. I applied for the US Foreign Service recently and I'm still in the middle of that loooooong process.

Oooh, good luck! So you've taken the Foreign Service Exam?

Yup, last October! I'm waiting for the results of the Qualifications Evaluation Panel right now.
